LIFT WITH YOUR HEAD:

The Training and Movement Philosophies of the Physical Subculture

By Chip Conrad

$21.95

“So many books merely offer instruction. Lift with Your Head offers insight and reflection. If deep down you’ve always had the inkling that we should play and have fun in order to live well, this book will articulate why that’s valid, even vital. If you hanker for recess in your adult life, if you are turned off by today’s corporately-run gyms, if you want to feel better without all the drudgery of “three 12-rep sets” and 12-week programs, this book will oxygenate a flame in you that has been quietly flickering.

- Kat Ricker, The Mighty Kat

Yippee, it’s here. Lift With Your Head is a collection of exercises and philosophy that makes up the premise of the Physical SubCulture movement.

Yes, there are a handful of the exercises we use that aren’t seen in most commercial McGyms, but they’re useless without a strong philosophy as the foundation of the workout. The second half of the book is the handbook of WHAT we do while the first half of the book is the WHY behind it all. A trained monkey can demonstrate exercises, but the pursuit of strength and health will only succeed with passion, involving the spirit and mind. Learning an exercise is easy, creating a personal philosophy about movement and strength is an entirely different thing. That is the premise of Lift With Your Head.

Listen up, gym rats, fitness freaks and iron heads. Has your workout routine gone stale? Stuck in that five-sets-twelve-reps rut? Chip Conrad, owner of the eclectic Midtown gym Body Tribe Fitness, has the perfect prescription. Conrad’s self-published book presents a unique training philosophy, which combines decidedly old-school exercise elements with an expansive knowledge of contemporary fitness and nutrition science. Forgotten exercises such as the windmill, the kettle-bell swing and the farmer’s walk are offered as alternative to restricted motion of weight machines. New additions include flipping old tractor tires or beating on them with lead-filled bats. Motivational tips for diet and keeping your routine on track are also included. It’s all delivered via Conrad’s lively, first-person prose, making Lift With Your Head one of those rare fitness books you actually want to read.

Chapters include:

Forward by Mistress Krista Scott-Dixon

Routine versus Ritual

The Process of Visualization

Defining Strength

and exercises like

The Bent Press

The Tire Flip

The almighty Deadlift
