Art Shows

art-1.jpg

There’s a derogatory term for non-galleries that host art shows.

Muffin Shop Galleries.

Ya know the place, quaint mom-and-pop shop puts cute little pictures on the wall to add a sense of decor, usually featuring local artists who love puppies and farm landscapes.

Some local art professors have been known to refer to our shows that way. Yet we’ve won awards for our art shows and we feature artists who are not only more interesting than much of what goes up at traditional galleries, but much more daring, dangerous and fun. Our shows have featured amazing artists who have never had a show to veteran artists who have shown around the US. The real good news is that you will rarely see any art done by yours truly.

Our Second Saturday ArtWalk shows have become a staple of midtown art scene. Several hundred artists have shown throughout our four and a half years of shows (56 shows at last count). Instead of having to search for artists, like we did in the early months, we’re now booked out 6 months or so. Our shows have been featured in Sacramento Magazine, the News and Review and the Sacramento Bee, as well as Good Morning Sacramento (channel 31).

Muffin Shop Gallery indeed.

Coming Up

May is our 5th anniversary, and therefore our annual BODY show, with all art havng to do with, about, on or from the Body. About 2 dozen artists, including fire dancers, musicians, painters, sculptors and an Acro Yoga instructor. Come celebrate our 5th year, and hopefully our air conditioning will be fixed.

LAST MONTH

2322332710_faa968d47b.jpgApril brings a major collaboration to the Midtown arts community, as Midtown Grid has organized the Green Second Saturday monster event, featuring a bunch of different venues and somewhere in the vicinity of 100 artists. Of course we’ll be deep in the heart of it, featuring one of the biggest roster of artists we’ve had yet. Art from or about the 3 R’s (no, not reading, writing and ‘rithmatic) will cover the walls (and possibly floors and bodies), while San create the aural splendors outside. Although the rumors of U2 being here are not true, there are stories circulating that there might be food from some dear friends of ours…

So join us, and many others, for a big night. Here’s the Scary Art Collective post for the event:

The first Green Second Saturday Art Walk.
With the tireless efforts of local artist Kiffanie Stahle, Midtown Grid helped to transform April’s Second Saturday Art Walk into a green-themed event in honor of April’s Earth Day.

Join us in considering what it means to be a green city.

April

March was our API/Born Free benefit show supporting the animal rights groups that have recently united. This was our third show for API in as many years, and also holds the honor of being the most successful. With well over 20 artists featuring animal-themed art from all over Northern California, this was one heck of a show. As soon as some folks send me some JPEGS of their works (ahem…), I’ll post some pictures.

It’s our annual February Fotography Show. Currently we’re featuring Tribe member Gregory Dorado as well as Tribal friend Wesley Buckingham and the return of a perpetual favorite, Garret Cotham. They will be joined by many other friends like Kiffanie Stahle as well, so, as usual, we’ll be where the party is.

This show kicked ass, and it is a tribute to the quality of my tribal members that genitalia mixed with mysticism was so well received by members and clients (hehe, I said ‘members’). A little naughty, a little racy, but full of introspection and brain melting, it’s the Ryan Seng Project.

December, 2007:

It’s getting hard to keep up! December was the crazy-awesome Art for Under $100 show, and a big collection of Northern California’s most innovative freaks put stuff all over my walls, only to watch it sell like crazy. of course the Scary Art Collective came out in force again, and we were also joined by Dan Gregor, Matt McCord, and many others.

‘Twas a huge bunch o’ fun.

November, 2007

FOUND Magazine stopped by for their 4th visit through Sacramento, and their 3rd stop here at Bodytribe in as many years. We’re always thrilled when it is time for them to go on tour because we can be sure they’ll pay us a visit. For those of you who missed it, you should hang your heads in shame.

Second Saturday

October is always one of my favorite shows. We call it the Creepy Art show to honor the season, and we go all out to get our inner pagan on and present a fun, and potentially shocking, show. Of course our great friends at the Scary Art Collective was out in force, as well as a good collection of other artists from past shows. We’ve been on a streak with Art Lessing and the Flower Vato, who played for us again before playing the following night for the NorCal Noise Fest. I’m not done with these guys, so expect them again in the near future.

Sock puppets can be scary too.

September:

September was a mixed bag show, like a buffet of artistic talent spewing all over our walls and floors, like a scene from Caligula, but with art instead of body fluids and naked bodies (sorry). From Ouija boards to furniture to good ol’ hanging art, we had a little of everything. Come out and join the fun. Our friends, Art Lessing, performed as well.
