Olympic Lifts and More: the ’strange’ lifts

Saturday, April 5th. 11am-2pm.

The sport of Weightlifting has old roots. Today, although internationally popular, it is most alive to American eyes only through the Olympics, but otherwise unseen in most commercial gyms or ‘health clubs.’ But for empowerment, performances and complete body conditioning, the original Weightlifting concepts and techniques are unparalleled. Although the modern competition includes the clean and jerk and snatch, we’ll delve into the historical origins of these lifts and play with the one-handed, kettlebell and dumbbell versions that were used in competition over a century ago. But let’s take even further. What about odd object lifts, like giant tires and sandbags? Let’s throw those in the mix as well, since the same concept of speed and flow to any great lift. This will be a great course in training and a bit of physical culture history as well.

Old tools, new uses. Play with leverage and rotation unlike anything a dumbbell can offer. Let’s cut through the trendy nonsense and get to the nitty gritty intensity these tools can provide. Along with hands-on instruction we’ll discuss program design ideas that offer brutal-yet-playful ways of completely overhauling your training ritual.
