Kono, etc.

Sorry, little time leaves me sans a workout for you guys today, but since we’ve only had a couple takers on the Istanbul was Once Constantinople combo from last Friday (nice job AJ and Jason), let’s leave that as a challenge.

Before I mention anything about the meet on Sunday, let’s talk about the Olympics. Despite the politics and the beautiful yet highly ironic opening ceremonies, the weightlifting has had some decent moments of inspiration. For one, watching a collection of women who weigh considerably less than I do out-lift me by truly humbling margins does a couple of interesting things to the psyche.

First, I could ride The Excuse Bus: Well those women have [insert whatever reason you need to sleep through the night here].

Or…

How about realizing that they are human specimens (mostly) as much as I am, and therefore if my butt is still attached, I haven’t trained TRAINED MY ASS OF YET.

On that note, Not only is Jim Schmitz teaching a USAW Weightlifting club coach certification here the first weekend of October, but our close friend from the bay, Cody Fielding, will be teaching a Clubbell certification probably a month after that (date not yet set in stone).

This weekend at the Tommy Kono Open…

Deane Knapp, Ed Pierini and I all competed in the masters division of yesterday’s meet and can agree on the same thing. We did well, but can do much better. Watch below as i get my kinks out for my next competition on Oct 25th in Hawaii.

  • Congratulations, Chip! Thanks for the great footage. BTW, we did the “I was Once C” combo with Allyson Friday and I loved this combo. Hope to do it in again timed. Great art show Saturday. You keep on kicking ass!

  • If you want to watch the Olympic action and skip all the commercials go here:

  • Thanks Erica. And thanks for the link, Dean. I should mention that the website will a) update you when they’re about to stream the weightlifting live (if you sign up for it) and b) keeps each day on file as a video, which Dean’s link will lead you to. You can also view a buttload of other sports as well. I’ve watched almost all the weightlifting either live or on video through the internet. Technology doesn’t entirely suck.

  • Nice work, Chip. What were your attempts?

  • Nice work. Speaking of videos, following a link from Straighht to the Bar I ended up killing some time last night watching video from here:

  • Great to see you in action Chip! You really get under the bar on those jerks.

Also, I had the fortune of a brief, introductory session with Cody Fielding and it was wonderful. I highly recommend working with him if you can.

  • Results from the Kono Open are here:

Chip, you’d have placed 3rd in the men’s open division. Not too shabby. AND, I know you had more in ya!

  • Hey… according to those stats I was 4th in the masters, but according to my medal and that ceremony thingy, I was second. What gives?

  • Somebody screwed up? So do know what the qualifying totals are for the American Open?

  • You r the man Chip!!! Very inspiring. Def would like to come down for the Jim Schmitz weekend. I will get in contact with u about that later. For now….headed to the platform for clean & jerks & some snatches. Thanks for the pump up.

  • Seth, we’d love to have you down here. Hope you can make it. Heck, Healthsport would have to hike up your pay a bit if you walked in with a USAW cert.

  • Seriously and thats a cert i have been wanting to obtain for awhile. So two birds one stone. could come check out Bodytribe and come back demanding more $. good thinking Chip. By the way somebody stole your book from me. Hope they get as much out of it as me!!

  • I’ll have one waiting for you in October.

  • OK Chip, I figured it out. You placed 2nd in your weightclass in the Master’s, but according to the Metzer-Malone formula that ranks Masters across age AND weight classes you were fourth. It kinda gives the older (less testosterone?) athletes a fighting chance.
