[ May 3, 2008; 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. ]
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008, 11-2.
Old tools, new uses. Play with leverage and rotation unlike anything a dumbbell can offer. Let’s cut through the trendy nonsense and get to the nitty gritty intensity these tools can provide. Along with hands-on instruction we’ll discuss program design ideas that offer brutal-yet-playful ways of completely overhauling your training ritual.

Piece by Piece

Workout:
Jerk press practice. Sets of 3, never heavier than 60% of max.
KB incline press with bands. 3 sets of 5-6. Featured in this video (at 30 seconds).
Static-explosive bench press/ explosive pushups. 10 second hold/6 presses/pushups until you fall on your face. 3 sets.

Deadlift what you sow.

Snatches. Technique practice. Sets of 2-3 at about 70% max.
Front squats. 4 sets of 5.
KB Swings/pullups/burpees: 21/15/9 for time. See? I don’t totally hate CrossFit. Although getting this combo under 10 minutes took some bad words and sweating.

Challenge day

Coming up soon, we’re going to have a challenge day. We’re in a lull between power lifting meets or sans any good summer goals right now, so why not throw something together that gives us all a day of groaning, straining powerful fun. Since I’m not a porn director, I figure a good […]

Lighten up

Max Jerk Press: You know the drill; heavy, low rep sets, with big rests, until you’re only doing single rep sets, progressively heavier until no can do.
Daves’ Combo: Heavy sandbag carry/heavy sled blast/push up crawls/pullups. 100 feet/100 feet/ 50 feet/10. Here’s the video of the first time we did these.

Time it, then do it […]

Forgiven

The overhead squat challenge
Overhead squat: your bodyweight on the bar, as many reps as possible. If you don’t squeeze in a good number of warm up sets first, you’re either super human or an idiot.
KB Squat Press/sled pull/sandbag carry/KB 1-arm snatch. 6 reps/100 feet/clean, 50 feet, clean, 50 feet/ 6 per side. Don’t mess around […]

Stomp out Racism, with one possible exception.

The Carrying Combo:
One of my all-time favorite combos, featured somewhere in this video:
Hang Snatches/Full Cleans/Deadlifts - all with farmer’s walks in between. 2 barbells (a heavier one for the cleans) and a pair of loaded farmer’s walk handles. 6 reps of the snatches followed by 100 foot overhead walk, 6 reps of the cleans with […]

Peers for Fears

Here’s a quick, simple, no frills workout that lacks bells and whistles, but will wallop ya. It doesn’t matter what you use for toys - a barbell, some large stones, hookers - but we’re going to use three simple movement to cover a wide variety of the Spectrum of Strength.

Max bench press with bands. […]
