Shut up and Lift It

I received this email from our buddy Krista at www.stumptuous.com:

I know you’re always looking for little challenges so here’s one I just invented. I call it The Gauntlet.

You can call it whatever you like: 45 Pickup, Arms O’ Jello, etc.

Get 3 plates: 45, 35, and 25. Start with the 45. Lay it on the floor. The task is very simple: Imagine picking up this object from the floor and putting it on a high shelf.

Thus, squat down, pick the plate up any way you like, stand up with it, then immediately press it overhead.

Lower the plate to the floor (the rule is that it has to touch), and repeat. Repeat until you can’t do any more, then move to the 35 with no break. Then the 25.

Hurl chunks as needed.

I try to vary my grip on these so I’m not always picking up the plate exactly the same way every time.

Contestants could shoot for speed/time, reps per plate or total reps (e.g. get 100 reps any way you can), whichever floats their boat. This is more of a “work” exercise than a speed exercise, though, more like a slow clumsy clean and press. If they are frickin badasses, do it one handed.

Cheers, Krista

We’ve played with it and added some variations.  One handed is a bitch, especially when attempting to snatch a 45 plate.  Other variations include using a 100 pound plate as well, pinching plates together (2 45’s, 2 35’s, etc.), and using your teeth (not recommended.

Have fun.
